Asthma can be caused either inside or outside the workplace. It can be difficult to establish if the cause is through work but the condition could be said to be ‘occupational’ if your symptoms worsen during the working week, or at the end of the working day, or if you see an improvement to your condition whilst away from your place of work either at weekends or on holiday. Asthma can develop as an illness at work within weeks or months, but there is no specific time scale, and it can even show after 20 years.
Symptoms
The symptoms of asthma are coughing, wheezing and a tightness of the chest. There are varying degrees of the severity of these symptoms.
Common causes include
1. Polluted air.
2. Cleaning materials.
3. Spray paint.
4. Animals and insects.
5. Wood Dust.
6. Flour and Grain.
7. Fur.
Prevention
It is the employers’ responsibility to ensure that there are sufficient extractor fans in situ within the workplace or to provide you with specialised breathing equipment to prevent you from inhaling the sensitiser. They must follow the guidance with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations Act of 1994 and, in accordance with this legislation, and the employer should carry out a full risk assessment with regard to this issue. Employees should also be given regular medical check-ups so that any sign of occupational asthma can be identified and treated early.
