What is campylobacter infection?
· Campylobacter is a bacteria that causes food poisoning.
· The incubation period is usually 2 to 5 days after exposure to the organism but can be 1 – 11 days.
Symptoms of campylobacter infection
· Most people suffer from diarrhoea, cramping, abdominal pain, fever and sometimes nausea and vomiting.
· Some people who are infected with campylobacter do not have any symptoms at all.
· The illness typically lasts 1 week but occasionally some long-term consequences can result from a campylobacter infection such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. A rarer disease is Guillain-Barre syndrome which occurs when a person’s immune system is ‘triggered’ to attack the body’s own nerves. This can lead to paralysis which lasts several weeks and usually requires intensive care.
Causes of campylobacter infection
· Most cases are associated with handling or eating undercooked poultry.
If you have suffered from campylobacter this may have been caused by consuming contaminated food provided by your hotel and as a result of poor hygiene and catering practices in your hotel.
