What is E-coli?
A bacterial infection caused by one of the many strains of the bacterium Escherichia coli.
Most strains of E-coli are harmless and live in the intestines of humans.
There are many different strains of E-coli around the world so when you are on holiday it is not uncommon for your intestine to be colonized by a new strain which can result in stomach upsets.
E-coli strain 0157 is the harmful strain and can cause very severe illness.
The incubation period is between 1 – 6 days.
Symptoms of E-coli
Symptoms include severe bloody diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain and flu-like symptoms. They usually resolve within 5-10 days but can lead to long term problems including kidney damage, paralysis, blindness and in extreme cases it can be fatal.
If you have suffered from E-coli this may have been the result of consuming contaminated food or drink at your hotel due to poor hygiene standards and catering practices.
