What is giardiasis?a
 
 
 · Giardiasis is an infection of the intestines caused by a microscopic parasite known as Giardia lamblia which is found in faeces.
 
 · The incubation period is usually 7 to 10 days but can vary anywhere between 5 and 25 days.
  
Symptoms of giardiasis
  
 · Most people develop a range of symptoms which can include watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps, flatulence, loss of appetite and nausea.
  
 · Some people infected by the parasite display no symptoms.
  
 · The symptoms can last for several weeks and can result in triggering Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
  
 · Transmitted via the faecal-oral route. The parasite is passed out in the faeces from which it can spread through poor hygiene, contaminated food, water or soil.
  
Causes of giardiasis
