Salmonella

What is Salmonella food poisoning?

Salmonella is a type of bacteria usually found in poultry, eggs, unprocessed milk and in meat and water. It may also be carried by pets such as birds, lizards and turtles.

Symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning

Symptoms usually occur within 12-36 hours of consuming the contaminated food/water and typically include stomach cramps, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and fever. Most mild types of salmonella infection clear up within four to seven days. In more severe cases it may be necessary for a person to be admitted to hospital for re-hydration.

Recovery from Salmonella food poisoning

Most people recover completely although it may be several months before their bowel habits return to normal. Occasionally some long-term consequences can result from a salmonella infection such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. A very small number of persons infected with salmonella will go on to develop pains in their joints, irritation of the eyes and painful urination. This is called Reiter’s syndrome. It can last for months or years and can lead to chronic arthritis.

Causes of Salmonella food poisoning

If you have suffered from salmonella this may have been caused by consuming contaminated food/water provided by your hotel and as a result of poor hygiene and catering practices in your hotel.
