· Cryptosporidium is a parasite that causes an infection called cryptosporidiosis.
· You can get cryptosporidiosis directly from another person or animal by touching faeces or by drinking contaminated water. If someone has a faecal accident in a swimming pool other bathers may swallow the contaminated water.
· The incubation period is 2-12 days and it is possible that you may not have any symptoms until after you return home.
Symptoms of Cryptosporidium
· Symptoms include diarrhoea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever and weight loss. Some people display no symptoms and do not appear to be ill.
· Highly infectious and symptoms could last for up to 3 weeks but it can affect people with weak immune systems for much longer.
· Some long term consequences can result from contracting this infection such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
