Holiday in The Dominican Republic and travellers diarrhoea

Thousands of holidays a year are ruined by traveller´s diarrhoea.  However there are way to protect against the illness, how to treat it and to limit the impact it has on your holiday.  You may be planning a holiday in The Dominican Republic, Egypt, The Far East or Europe, and traveller´s diarrhoea can strike anywhere in the world.  In some high risk environments it is thought up to 40% of all travellers can suffer symptoms of diarrhoea.  Always seek immediate medical help when you return to the UK as diarrhoea could be masking a more serious illness.

The facts about Diarrhoea?

Diarrhoea is a change in one’s normal stool pattern in which the stool becomes more frequent and watery. This can occur by itself or it can be accompanied by abdominal cramps, bloating, nausea, vomiting and fever. When diarrhoea occurs, the normal function of the intestine is disrupted, and Instead of absorbing fluids and nutrients from the material passing through, it reverses that process and secretes bodily fluids back into the intestine and passes them out of the body.

What is Travellers Diarrhoea?

The term ´Traveller´s Diarrhoea´ is used to describe the diarrhoea which hits international travellers all over the world.  TD is caused by infection with bacteria or viruses which are ingested by eating food or water that has been contaminated by the stool.  Sufferers of TD can remain contagious for weeks, and even pass on symptoms to their colleagues when they return to work in the UK.

What is Dysentery?

Dysentery is a very severe form of diarrhoea, where white cells, mucus, and sometimes blood, appear in the stool. Dysentery symptoms usually include cramps and fever. Dysentery should not be thought of as a separate disease, but a major form of the diarrhoeal disease. Dysentery or diarrhoea contracted on holiday abroad can be claimed for on your return to the UK.  If you contracted the virus through the negligence of another party in Egypt, The Dominican Republic or elsewhere, you can claim compensation through a personal injury solicitor.

The Risks of Diarrhoea

Diarrhoea can be contracted anywhere, but is much more prevalent in under-developed countries.  One scenario is to imagine local people, living in poverty close to the hotel you are staying in.  These people may not have toilets in their homes, and only a path separates their homes from the hotel kitchen.  The smell of the open sewer attracts flies which lay eggs in the stool.  These flies then lay eggs in the kitchen, where they are attracted by the smell of the food.  Work surfaces attract the flies which lay more eggs around the kitchen surfaces.  Diarrhoea is passed on to the kitchen workers who infect the food by handling it in an unclean environment.  The diarrhoea in turn is passed on to the holidaymakers in the restaurant.  Hours later he will probably wake up wanting to vomit, and suffering stomach cramps.  Even when holidaymakers obey all the rules, diarrhoea can easily be passed on to them by kitchen staff, via the food.  Holidaymakers can now claim compensation for holiday illness when they return to the UK.

Preventing Diarrhoea

Preventative medicine for diarrhoea is readily available from most pharmacies, and the virus normally responds quickly to treatment.  With fast, effective medicine, traveller´s  diarrhoea should not last longer than 24 hours. Travellers who fly from developed countries to developing countries are most at risk to get diarrhoea from infectious organisms.  All developing countries in Latin America, Africa, The Middle East and Asia are considered high risk.  Caribbean destinations such as The Dominican Republic are an intermediate risk and low risk destinations include The United States, Canada, Northern Europe, New Zealand and Australia.
