As motorcycles and mopeds become more and more popular, the risk of accident while driving one also increases. Motorbike riders will always tell you how exciting it is to ride a bike compared to driving a car, especially when considering our congested roads and motorways. The down side is that although motorcycles only make up 1% of the traffic the UK´s roads, they account for 18% of all deaths and serious injuries – meaning that motorcyclists are 40 times more likely to die on the roads than a car driver. Cars are much easier to see than bikes and car drivers are much better protected if they are involved in an accident.
Motorcyclists should always be alert and anticipate what other motorists are likely to do. They should always look over their shoulders before making a manoeuvre. Flourescent clothing is a must and dipped headlights should always stay on –even during the day. The centre of the lane is the best place to ride a motorcycle. When preparing to turn, motorcyclists should use indicators at the proper time, and move over to the correct position in good time. Before overtaking, motorcyclists should make sure they can see the road ahead clearly, and never overtake on bends in the road or near a junction. Bad weather such as ice or fog are known to contribute to accidents, and motorcycle riders particularly, need to take extra care in such conditions.
Before turning at a junction, check in your mirrors to make sure a motorcycle is not beside your vehicle. Double check in each direction that you have not missed a motorcycle approaching – they are a lot easier to miss than a car or lorry. If you park at the side of the road check for cyclists and motorcyclists before opening your doors – more accidents are caused in this way than you would believe. When overtaking a motorbike, give it the same amount of room as you would a car.
Wearing correct protective clothing can be the difference between life and death if an accident occurs. The first priority should be an approved safety helmet which fits properly. A damaged or scratched safety helmet should be replaced immediately. A proper CE marked jacket, trousers and boots which are reflective in the dark should be worn when riding a motorcycle.
