Illness at the Riu Bachata hotel Dominican Republic

Holidaymakers have complained of vomiting, diarrhoea and severe stomach ache after staying at the Riu Bachata Hotel and they suspect this was caused as a result of eating contaminated food at the hotel.

A British couple were staying at the Riu Bachata Hotel to get married, but the bridegroom ended up in hospital for three days, including his wedding day. Other members of the wedding party, including the bride, were struck down with the sickness and some were still ill when they returned to the UK.

The bridegroom said: "When I came out of hospital I was scared to eat the food which all tasted the same anyway. There is no way it should be classed as 5 star and wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy."

Holiday sickness and food poisoning has been reported at the Barcelo Santiago hotel in Tenerife.

Sickness Hell at Tamaimo Tropical Tenerife

Several cases of sickness have been reported at the Tamaimo Tropical Hotel in Puerto Santiago, Tenerife.

Holidaymakers have made complaints about the quality of the food and the rooms and an infestation of cockroaches at the Tamaimo Tropical.

One guest found cockroaches crawling in the bathroom, and, after complaining to reception, was told to expect cockroaches as Tenerife was a volcanic island. The couple were then moved to another apartment, which was also crawling with the bugs.

She says: “Next day my husband went down with the sickness bug, which seemed to be affecting a lot of people in the complex, and this ruined 2 days of our holiday as we were confined to the room. I was lucky to escape the sickness bug, but many other guests were ill. We were told that a sickness outbreak had been going on for months at the hotel, and it needs to be sorted out. The hotel needs to face up to the serious issues it has.”

Another couple also suffered illness during their stay at the Tamaimo Tropical in Tenerife, and said: “After both of us eating pork for our dinner on Wednesday of the week we stayed, within a short time of returning to our room we became very ill with vomiting and diarrhoea. We reported our illness to the reps who tried to pass it off as a bug on the island. After emerging from our room two days later, we talked to many other guests who had also suffered illness after eating the same meal on the same night.”

Another group of holidaymakers booked an all-inclusive break at the Tamaimo Tropical as a birthday celebration which turned into a nightmare.

One of the party reported: “On the second day of our holiday the first member of our party was ill with diarrhoea and vomiting, promptly followed by three other members of the group. We discovered that many other guests had suffered the same fate. The virus seems to be out of control but still unsuspecting guests are arriving daily by the coach load. My advice would be – if you have booked a holiday at the Tamaimo Tropical in Lanzarote, be prepared to have your holiday ruined.”

Boudicca Cruise ship Norovirus update

After several outbreaks of Norovirus on the Boudicca cruise ship during 2009 and January 2010, several affected passengers have complained to Fred Olsen Cruise Liners and received unsatisfactory replies.

Some passengers who suffered Norovirus on the Boudicca Christmas cruise to Madeira, which departed on the 22nd December, and the mini-cruise to Amsterdam on December 18th, 2009, have only just received acknowledgements of their complaints from Fred Olsen, and others have been fobbed off altogether.

Derisory offers of vouchers have been made to other passengers who suffered sickness and food poisoning on the Boudicca cruise ship, eventhough the vessel was hit with three outbreaks of Norovirus in as many weeks, and a total of 519 passengers were taken ill.

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines claimed the Boudicca was deep-cleaned following the first outbreak of Norovirus, but many more passengers were taken ill on subsequent cruises.

During the Boudicca cruise which left Portsmouth on December 6th, 2009, 180 out of 800 passengers were taken ill. Fred Olsen claimed the Boudicca was deep-cleaned when it returned to Portsmouth on the 18th December, a day early, although it left port for a four day mini-cruise to Amsterdam later the same day and another 50 passengers were diagnosed with Norovirus.

Fred Olsen claims the Boudicca was again, deep-cleaned after the mini-cruise to Amsterdam, and the ship set sail again for Madeira on the 22nd December, 2009. During the Boudicca Christmas cruise, 289 out of 795 passengers were diagnosed with Norovirus and gastroenteritis, and the ship returned to Portsmouth a day early.

The latest outbreak of Norovirus on board the Boudicca was the seventh time one of the Fred Olsen fleet has been hit by food poisoning during the past 12 months, and there was another outbreak in October, 2009.

Despite assurances from Fred Olsen that the Boudicca had been deep-cleaned between cruises in December, 2009, passengers who suffered Norovirus claimed there was not sufficient time for the ship to be properly cleaned, and that Fred Olsen were responsible for subsequent outbreaks of the virus.

Food poisoning reports at the Flamingo Oasis Hotel in Benidorm

Recent reports have been received about a possible outbreak of Norovirus and food poisoning at the 4-star Flamingo Oasis Hotel in Benidorm.Holidaymakers have complained of sickness, diarrhoea and vomiting while staying at the hotel in December, 2009 and January, 2010. Four members of one family were violently ill, and on reporting their illness to the hotel reps, were told they ´probably got food poisoning from somewhere outside the hotel´. Possible food poisoning outbreak at Club Playa Blanca Lanzarote

We have received reports of a possible salmonella outbreak at the four-star Club Playa Blanca in Lanzarote, it is claimed that people were taken ill after eating there between the 6th and 14th January, 2010.

Several holidaymakers have fallen ill and have been prescribed antibiotics. A local chemist in Lanzarote is believed to have said that a number of people had complained after eating at the Club Playa Blanca.

People who have suffered illness at the Club Playa Blanca also reported sickness amongst other holidaymakers, but could not confirm it was caused by Salmonella.

Thomas Cook has claimed the illness was due to a bug going round the hotel, and that it was nothing to do with Salmonella.Complaints were also made against Playa Blanca in Lanzarote during August and September, 2008.

Outbreaks of serious illness on Cruise ships in 2009

Several outbreaks of serious illness were reported on board cruise ships in 2009. Common cruise ship illnesses included Norovirus, food poisoning and gastroenteritis, and hundreds of passengers went on to claim compensation for ruined holidays and medical expenses.

The following outbreaks of cruise ship illness were reported in 2009:
December 29th: The Boudicca, Fred Olsen Cruises

This cruise onboard the Boudicca was affected by a gastroenteritis type virus which affected 289 people. Fred Olsen tried to reassure passengers that 3-day deep clean of the vessel would take place before the next cruise to the Canary Islands which was due to depart on 6th January, 2010.

December 22nd: The Boudicca, Fred Olsen Cruises

The BBC reported that 50 passengers were taken ill with Norovirus onboard the Boudicca, during a four day mini-cruise from Portsmouth to Zeebrugge and Amsterdam which departed on December 18th.

December 18th: The Boudicca, Fred Olsen Cruises

The Portsmouth News reported that up to 300 passengers were believed to have been struck down by Norovirus and diarrhoea on the Boudicca cruise which left Portsmouth on the 6th December. Bound for Madeira, La Gomera, Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lisbon, illness broke out four days into the cruise and 180 passengers and crew became sick.

November 5th: Independence of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International

Several passengers on the Independence of the Seas cruise reported outbreaks of food poisoning on board the cruise ship. One couple were struck down just two days before the end of their holiday, with severe diarrhoea, fever and headaches, and they were later confirmed to have contracted campylobacter, which is a common form of food poisoning.

October 30th: Norwegian Spirit, Norwegian Cruise Line

Nine crew members and 73 passengers were taken ill onboard the Norwegian Spirit with gastrointestinal illness during a 16-day cruise which ended on November 8th in New Orleans.

October 22nd: Noordam, Holland America Line

The Noordam sailed into Gibraltar with food poisoning onboard, and a number of tour guides and taxi drivers refused to take the passengers, after word of the gastroenteritis outbreak reached them. Nineteen crew and 159 passengers were reported ill with gastrointestinal illness on the 15 day cruise which ended on November 1st in Fort Lauderdale.

October 18th: Boudicca, Fred Olsen Cruises

According to reports, 16 passengers onboard the Boudicca were confined to their cabins after the ship was hit by an outbreak of Norovirus. A total of 57 passengers were reported ill with gastroenteritis-like symptoms and the ship´s doctor was also confined to his cabin after contracting the contagious bug. The ship was on a 21-night cruise of the Adriatic which departed Portsmouth on October 5th.

September 9th: Balmoral, Fred Olsen Cruises

Approximately 100 passengers were struck down with Norovirus onboard the Balmoral Cruise Ship. The cruise arrived in Dover a day early so it could undergo a deep clean before a 12 day cruise to the Baltic.
July 31st: Voyager of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International
It was reported that 10% of the crew onboard the Voyager of the Seas were struck down with the H1N1 Virus and 70 more crew members showed signs of the disease. Members of the crew and passengers were isolated when they came down with flu like symptoms, and one passenger was found to have swine flu. When the ship docked at Marseille, local authorities initially barred passengers from going ashore, but the majority of passengers were given permission to disembark after a doctor visited the ship.

July 23rd: Thompson Spirit, Thomson Cruises

Hundreds of passengers were struck down with Norovirus onboard the Thompson Spirit, according to newspaper reports. The vomiting bug swept through the ship in early May, and a large number of people were confined to their cabins.
July 6th: Marco Polo, Transocean Cruises

The Daily Mail reported that 380 people (340 passengers and 40 crew members) were taken ill on the Marco Polo Cruise Ship out of a total of 1,079 people onboard. Five people had to be taken to hospital and the cruise had to terminate early because of the illness. A previous outbreak on the same ship took place during a cruise to Iceland, and the ship´s master faced possible legal action as the illness outbreak was not reported.

June 16th: Diamond Princess, Princess Cruises

According to news reports, Norovirus onboard the Diamond Princess Cruise Ship caused several people to be confined to their cabins for fear of spreading the virus.

June 16th: Oriana, P&O Cruises

Passengers reported Norovirus onboard the Oriana after a previous cruise saw 50 confirmed cases. New passengers were not informed of previous outbreak before sailing on June 1st. The outbreak was still reported to be ongoing on June 15th when the ship returned to Southampton.

June 13th: Millennium, Celebrity Cruises

Several passengers reported sickness onboard the Millenium during the cruise from Seward AK to Vancouver BC and Norovirus outbreak. At least 20 passengers contracted the virus according to passenger reports.

May 31st: Oriana, P&O Cruises

Passengers reported a Norovirus outbreak on the Oriana, after the Captain confirmed the illness. Fifty cases of Norovirus were reported.
May 30th: Amsterdam, Holland America Line

The Amsterdam reported that 109 crew members and passengers had reported suffering with gastroenteritis during a 7 day cruise.

May 27th: Coral Princess, Princess Cruises

A gastrointestinal illness struck down passengers and crew onboard the Coral Princess cruise ship. Up to 128 crew members became ill.

May 20th: Sea Princess, Princess Cruises

A newspaper reported a Norovirus outbreak on a cruise ending in Montego Bay. The captain announced the Norovirus outbreak on the day the cruise was due to end, and one couple had to be moved from the ship to a hotel in Montego Bay. Ten more couples were later removed from the ship to stay at the same hotel and Princess Cruises confirmed the Norovirus outbreak.

May 6th: Island Princess, Princess Cruises

A total of 107 crew and passengers were confirmed by the Island Princess to be suffering gastrointestinal illness on the 14 day cruise ending on May 7th.
April 29th: Carnival Liberty, Carnival Cruise Lines
Carnival Liberty reported 215 passengers and crew were struck down with gastrointestinal illness on a 7 day cruise ending in Miami on April 25th.

April 23rd: Amsterdam, Holland America Line

The Amsterdam reported 160 passengers and crew became ill with gastroenteritis on a 22 day Panama Canal Cruise ending in Vancouver on April 24th. The cause of the illness was Cyclospora cayetanensis.

April 12th: Freedom of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International

A passenger reported that over 100 passengers were confined to their cabins onboard the Freedom of the Seas between March 29th and April 5th after an outbreak of Norovirus.

March 24th: Westerdam, Holland America Line

A passenger reported gastroenteritis and food poisoning onboard the Westerdam during a cruise between March 15th and March 22nd, 2009. The captain confirmed there were some cases of sickness among crew and passengers.

March 19th: Queen Mary 2, Cunard Line

Passengers reported an outbreak of Norovirus onboard the QM2 during a world cruise.

March 12th: Mercury, Celebrity Cruises

Gastrointestinal illness was reported on the 16 day circle cruise to Hawaii and San Diego onboard the Mercury, and 119 passengers and crew were struck down.

March 2nd: Azamara Quest, Azamara Cruises

A passenger reported that no other passengers boarded from the Hong Kong to Beijing leg of the cruise as the ship was cleaned top to bottom after an outbreak of Norovirus.

February 27th: Oosterdam, Holland America Line

Gastrointestinal illness struck down 120 passengers and crew during the cruise which ended in San Diego.

February 15th: Zaandam, Holland America Line

A passenger reported that during a cruise on the Zaandam between San Diego and Hawaii, which began on February 5th, several passengers suffered diarrhoea and vomiting, and many were isolated in their rooms. Ninety-five passengers and crew were taken ill and the cruise ended in San Diego on February 20th.

February 11th: Coral Princess, Princess Cruises

Over 270 passengers and crew were taken ill onboard the Coral Princess with gastrointestinal illness during a 10 day Caribbean/Panama cruise.

February 6th: Balmoral, Fred Olsen Cruises

Reports found that 230 people were taken ill onboard the Balmoral, during an 18 day cruse of the Canary Islands and West Africa, when an outbreak of Norovirus occurred. Fifty passengers were confined to their cabins and the vessel was refused entry to the Cape Verde Islands.

January 26th: The Sinfonia, MSC Cruises

Reports showed that 46 passengers became ill with gastroenteritis onboard the Sinfonia, which was sailing between Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires. The outbreak was reported on January 8th.

January 19th: Tahitian Princess, Princess Cruises

The Captain of the Tahitian Princess announced that there had been an outbreak of Norwalk Virus onboard the cruise ship and that a number of people had been confined to their cabins. It was reported that 86 people were taken ill with the Norwalk Virus.

January 9th: Orchestra, MSC Cruises

Passengers reported an outbreak of an influenza-type illness that affected hundreds of passengers onboard the Orchestra Cruise Ship.

January 9th: Maasdam, Holland America Line

What is Norovirus?

Norovirus is a group of viruses that cause the ´stomach-flu´ or gastroenteritis, and the virus has nothing to do with the flu virus. A luxury cruise liner has been hit by three outbreaks of Norovirus in as many weeks. A total of 519 passengers have been taken ill with the virus during three cruises on the Boudicca over winter, despite assurances from the owners who insisted the ship was free from virus.

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines said the vessel was twice deep-cleaned, following outbreaks of Norovirus, but the virus has returned with a vengeance to plague more passengers, at least twice.

Three people also died during Boudicca´s last cruise, although the company said the deaths were unrelated to the virus.

Derek and Marina Eaton contracted the virus on the last cruise and were confined to their cabins. After being taken ill, having booked the ship´s most expensive suite for the 14 night Christmas cruise to Madeira and the Canaries, at £10,155, Mr Eaton, 70, described it as a ´cruise from hell.´
During the initial 12-day cruise to the Canaries, which departed from Portsmouth on December 6, 180 of the 800 passengers aboard the Boudicca were struck down with illness.

The firm said that when the 28,000-ton ship returned to Portsmouth on December 18, it was deep-cleaned and was free from the virus. Later that day, it departed on a four-day mini-cruise to Amsterdam and around 50 of the 827 passengers were then diagnosed with the stomach bug.
When the Boudicca returned, the company vowed to thoroughly clean the ship before the next cruise, which was the one Mr and Mrs Eaton were on, which departed for Madeira on December 22nd.

This time, 289 of the 795 passengers were diagnosed with Norovirus and gastroenteritis, and the ship - which can carry up to 900 passengers - returned to Portsmouth a day early.
Fred Olsen Cruise Lines has blamed infected passengers for bringing the virus aboard.
The latest outbreak would be the seventh time in the past year that one of firm's fleet has been hit by the illness.

There was another outbreak on the Boudicca in October.
Mr Eaton, 75, a company owner, from Woburn Sands in Bedfordshire, said he and his wife had been looking forward to spending New Year's Eve in Madeira to see the island's fireworks display, which is said to be the largest in the world.

But after falling ill, they spent the night confined to their cabin and missed the display. They had to spend a total of four days in their cabin and missed three of the six islands on the cruise. Mr Eaton said: 'The management of the company should have cancelled the cruise once the first set of passengers fell ill.

'I don't believe for one second that they deep-cleaned the ship because there wasn't sufficient time.'Noroviruses - a group of viruses - are the most common cause of gastroenteritis (vomiting and diarrhoea) and affect up to one million in Britain every year. A company spokesman said it would refund passengers a day´s travel as the ship returned a day early and it also offered each passenger £100 for the inconvenience.

But there has not been any compensation paid for days lost due to sickness.
'Throughout every cruise great attention is paid on a daily basis to the hygiene and cleanliness of the vessel,' said a company spokesperson. At the end of each cruise where there were a number of gastro cases, a programme of deep cleaning and disinfection was carried out, with subsequent departures delayed as necessary.'

More than 250 passengers on another Fred Olsen vessel - the Balmoral - have also fallen ill with Norovirus. The ship left Dover for the Canary Islands on December 21 with 1,350 passengers. A spokesman said it would be deep-cleaned in one day. There were also outbreaks of Norovirus on the Balmoral last February when 200 fell ill and in September when 78 caught the virus.

Operator Fred Olsen Cruises vowed to give the Boudicca, a deep clean, before it sets off again, but this will not help the passengers already affected.

A spokesperson for the cruise company said: "Prior to the ship embarking on her next cruise, a thorough cleaning and disinfecting of the vessel will be undertaken, so her departure will be slightly delayed."

They also emphasised the "fastidious hygiene and disinfecting regime" which Fred Olsen Cruises operates.

Last month, a study by Boston Medical School found that on average only one in three toilets on cruise ships are disinfected daily.

BBC´s Watchdog programme last night highlighted the pain and suffering of holidaymakers who stayed at the Holiday Village, Sarigerme, on the south-west coast of Turkey, which has been linked to cases of food poisoning and holiday illness since 2005.

Victoria Shaw, 11, caught Salmonella, and her dad, Mark was taken ill with campylobacter, which is an intestinal illness often caused by undercooked meat or cross-contamination of food. Mark says he was so ill that he went to the toilet 37 times in a day, and he couldn´t climb the stairs.Watchdog sent undercover researchers to the Holiday Village, Sarigerme, Turkey, who found the hotel to be clean, but also heard about many more cases of illness at the resort, including severe diaereses and vomiting.

Out of a group of 21 holidaymakers from Manchester, 13 became sick while staying at the hotel, and four more developed symptoms when they returned home. One rep at the hotel suggested an unfamiliar diet was causing illness amongst guests and said: “You find the food is very oily, in comparison to the UK where it´s salty. But there´s no sort of disease or bug or anything.”
Once back in the UK, two of the affected party took stool samples to their doctor, and one tested positive for Cryptosporidium, a waterborne parasite that affects the stomach and intestine.

Food poisoning in the UK is increasing. The number of cases of Salmonella has remained high in the past few years, and Campylobacter cases have doubled.

Bacillus cereus

This is a spore forming bacteria which is often found in rice from take-away restaurants. Symptoms of Bacillus cereus include diarrhoea and abdominal cramps between 6-15 hours after consumption of contaminated food. Nausea may occur and symptoms usually last 24 hours.

Source of Bacillus cereus

You can contract the disease from meat, milk, vegetables and fish, but outbreaks have normally been associated with rice, potato, pasta and cheese products. Sauces, puddings, soups, casseroles, pastries and salads can also be contaminated.

Campylobacter

Campylobacter is a group of spiral-shaped bacteria that can cause disease in humans and animals. Most human illness is caused by Campylobacter jejuni. Birds carry this illness without becoming ill themselves. Proper cooking, milk pasteurising and chlorination of water will all kill bacteria. This is the most common cause of acute bacterial diarrhoea in the UK. Symptoms include diarrhoea, cramping, abdominal pain and fever within 2-5 days after exposure, and can include nausea and vomiting.

Sources of Campylobacter

Raw or undercooked meat and poultry, offal, contaminated water or milk. Contamination is usually from excreta of birds, cattle and family pets. 40,000 cases are reported annually in the UK.

Clostridium perfringens

This is distributed throughout the environment and is normally found in human and animal intestines. The illness is caused by bacteria releasing toxins in the digestive canal. Symptoms include intense abdominal cramps and diarrhoea, and usually lasts less than 24 hours. It can last up to two weeks in severe cases. The illness can be mistaken with 24-hour flu.

Meat, meat products and gravy are usually implicated with food poisoning caused by clostridium perfringens. The young and the elderly are most at risk.

Clostridium botulinum

Clostridium botulinum causes severe food poisoning, and is caused by the ingestion of foods containing the neurotoxin formed from bacteria. The illness is rare but can be fatal and can be destroyed by heating at 80ºC for at least 10 minutes. Symptoms can show up 4 hours to 8 days after ingestion, and include weakness, vertigo, double vision, difficulty in speaking, swallowing and breathing, muscle weakness and constipation. Paralysis and death can follow between 18 and 36 hours later if untreated.

Cryptosporidium parvum

Members of this family are parasites from the intestinal tracts of fish, reptiles, birds and mammals. Cryptosporidium is passed in the faeces and is common in drinking water which originated from drainage of agricultural land. Symptoms usually include short term diarrhoea unless you suffer from a compromised immune system which can make the illness more severe.

Escherichia coli (E coli)

Normally found in animal and human intestines, E coli can be serious. One group of bacteria cause severe infantile diarrhoea and another cause traveller´s diarrhoea. Food sources include undercooked minced beef and unpasteurised milk. The elderly or very young can develop anaemia and renal failure. Symptoms include abdominal pain, fever, diarrhoea and vomiting and normally show between 10 and 72 hours after ingestion and last between 1 and 5 days.

Avoid E.coli

Ensure all meat is cooked thoroughly and juices run clear when spiked. Always avoid unpasteurised milk and separate raw and cooked foods to prevent cross contamination. Disinfect all surfaces and utensils used for food preparation. Wash hands regularly and always use a disinfectant hand wash.

Foods often incriminated include soft cheese, but the main contamination comes from food handlers.

Giardia lamblia

Giardia lamblia is a parasite which exists in two forms and lives in the small intestine, and is passed through faeces. Symptoms include severe diarrhoea from contaminated food or water.

Listeria monocytogenes

Listeria monocytogenes is a food-borne illness which is often transmitted to ready-to-eat foods, and is widely found in sewage and decaying vegetable matter. To avoid listeria always wash salads before use, never eat chilled products after the sell by date, and ensure your fridge is kept at the correct temperature. The onset of symptoms is normally 8 days to 3 months, and they include nausea, vomiting and diaereses. Meningitis and blood poisoning can occur in pregnant women. Antibiotic treatment is effective.

Foods known to cause listeria include: salads, sandwiches, paté, cooked meat and ready meals. Other suspected foods include milk, ice cream, raw and smoked fish and soft cheese.

Salmonella

Salmonella is found in animals, including poultry and pigs and environmental sources include water, soil, insects, kitchen surfaces, animal faeces, raw meats and raw seafood. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, fever and headache and normally start 6 to 48 hours after infection.

Shigella

Shigella is found in the intestine of man and other animals, and is also known as bacillary dysentery. Symptoms include diarrhoea, fever, vomiting and abdominal pain and can start 12 hours to 2 days after infection. Foods incriminated include salads, raw vegetables, milk and dairy products, poultry and contaminated water.

Norwalk Virus

Norwalk Virus is an intestinal infection which occurs in outbreaks and is normally associated with shellfish. The virus is passed in the stool of infected persons and people get infected by swallowing stool-contaminated food or water. Other sources of infection include salads, eggs, ice and ready to eat foods. Norwalk is more common in adults and older children and symptoms normally appear within 10 days. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach
cramps.

Anyone can get Norwalk virus infection, but it may be more common in adults and older children. Illness normally lasts 24 to 60 hours.

Five star holiday hell in Egypt

A couple are mounting a legal action over a holiday nightmare in Egypt.

David and Judith Harle were expecting to spend two weeks in luxury at the Hazua Beach Hotel in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, but instead found themselves battling against sickness bugs which ruined their holiday.

David, who works for TMD in Hartlepool, and Judith, a medical receptionist, spent £2,000 on the holiday of a lifetime in May, and quickly fell ill with stomach pains.

The couple are now taking action against Tour Operators, Thomas Cook.
Said David: “It was an absolute nightmare, and the holiday was totally ruined.

“I had never been to Egypt before and based on this experience, I won´t be going back.”

He also added: “My symptoms were so bad they left me dehydrated and I had to get an injection from the on-site clinic.
“We were both stuck at the hotel, and watching other people falling ill around us.”

It is claimed that undercooked food caused the food poisoning outbreak.A spokesman for Thomas Cook UK and Ireland said: “We take all reports of illness very seriously so we were very concerned to hear that Mr and Mrs Harle became unwell whilst they were on holiday.

“As a priority we are undertaking a full investigation with the hotel and our resort team and are liaising with the solicitor representing the couple.”

A family has told of their holiday illness nightmare at a Turkish hotel, where four of them fell ill within a few days.

Viven Hingley, fiancé Stephen Woodcock and their three children jetted off for a dream holiday to the Holiday Village in Turkey on 22nd June.

By the second week, holiday illness had affected Stephen, 43, Caris 14, Aiden 13 and Alisha, 8.The family soon discovered that other people at the same hotel had the same symptoms, and salmonella poisoning was suspected.

Viven, 42 said: “It was strange because the hotel was lovely. There were inspectors always checking around and the place looked spotless.“The only thing my children noticed was food left uncovered and people tipping fresh food over the leftover food rather than using fresh dishes.“Then in the second week my daughter started to feel off-colour, had a sore throat and felt lethargic.“Then my other daughter, son and fiancé got it and we were also rushing to the toilet with diarrhoea, feeling dizzy and had terrible stomach pains. It was a nightmare.”

When the family returned home they contacted a holiday illness solicitor specialising in travel law, and cases of salmonella were reported at the same hotel from as far back as 2005.

A spokesman for First Choice, the tour operator responsible for sending people to the hotel said: “At First Choice the health and safety of our customers is our primary focus.

“We closely monitor all the hotels which we operate to ensure the strictest health, safety, hygiene and comfort levels are maintained.”Vivien said: “I would advise people to be careful and to do some research before going to this hotel. It needs to be closed down and cleaned properly.”
