How do Dioralyte, Rapolyte or Electrolade powders work?
Dioralyte and Rapolyte rehydration salts consist of sugars, salts, glucose, sodium chloride, potassium chloride and disodium hydrogen citrate, and they are used to replace fluids lost during bouts of diarrhoea. Diarrhoea causes dehydration, which can prove particularly dangerous in elderly people and children. The powders need to be dissolved in water to prove effective, and the glucose helps the water be absorbed into the intestines. The contents of the Dioralyte sachets must always be dissolved in sterilised or boiled water.
Warning when using Dioralyte, Rapolyte or Electrolade powders
• The contents of the sachets should be mixed with the correct amounts of water, as instructed on the box/sachets.
• Never exceed the dose recommended on the information leaflet which comes with the sachets. Make sure you give the correct dose for children and babies.
• Always seek urgent medical help for infants with severe diarrhoea and/or vomiting.
• If symptoms persist for more than 36 hours, seek medical advice from a doctor.
Always use Dioralyte, Rapolyte or Electrolade with caution if you suffer from kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, if you are on a low sodium or potassium diet, if you suffer persistent diarrhoea or vomiting or if you cannot keep fluids down. Seek urgent medical advice before taking the medicines if you suffer any of the above.
