If you have suffered Legionnaire´s Disease on holiday abroad, you may be able to claim holiday illness and accident compensation. Legionnaire's disease is most commonly found in holiday hotels with ventilation systems for air conditioning and heating.
What is Legionnaire's disease?
A form of severe pneumonia, Legionnaire´s Disease causes headaches, fatigue, muscle aches, fever and weight loss. Confusion and disorientation can also occur in sufferers. Older people and smokers are particularly susceptible to Legionnaire´s Disease.
What causes Legionnaire's disease?
Caused by inhaling legionella bacteria, Legionnaire´s Disease can be fatal. Legionella bacteria can multiply quickly in standing water found in air conditioning and industrial cooling units. Water in air conditioning units should be changed daily by hotel staff, to minimise the risk of Legionnaire´s Disease. Many holiday package hotels do not have great standards of health and safety procedures, and it is not uncommon for holidaymakers to suffer holiday illness and personal injury on holiday abroad as a result.
Is Legionnaire's Disease serious?
Causing fatal illness to 10-15% of people who develop it, Legionnaire´s Disease is one of the most serious illnesses you can contract on holiday abroad. Not as common in England, as there are fewer air conditioning machines in hotels in the UK, over half of the people diagnosed with the disease contract in while on holiday abroad.
