Although rabies exposure is relatively uncommon among holidaymakers, it is not unheard of.  Rabies is an acute viral infection of the nervous infection which causes delirium and painful muscle spasms in the throat.  The disease can be fatal in human beings.

Rabies occurs in animals from less developed countries, plus parts of Europe and North America.  Humans can contract rabies if they are bitten by an infected animal.  Never touch any animals on holiday – even the ones which appear tame.  If you are bitten, early treatment can prevent rabies from developing.  If you are exposed to animals carrying the rabies virus while you are on a holiday package tour or excursion, and the animal bites you, you could claim compensation on your return to the UK.  Always contact a personal injury solicitor who specialises in holiday illness and accidents abroad, and who works on a no win no fee basis.

If you are bitten by an animal on holiday, always remember to:

1. Wash the wound immediately, using soap, and flush with clean water. Apply alcohol    if possible;

2. Seek urgent medical attention at the nearest hospital/doctor´s surgery;

3. You will probably need a rabies vaccination and the course of injections will have to start as soon after the bite as possible.

4. Wherever possible, ask for ‘human diploid cell vaccine’.

5. If you experience problems with medical treatment, contact the nearest British Consular official.

6. Note the date and place of the incident, the animal’s description and whether it was wild or stray.

7. If the animal was not wild or a stray, try to identify its owner as soon as possible to ascertain whether the animal is sick.

8. If the animal can be kept under observation for two weeks following the incident, exchange names, addresses and telephone numbers with the person responsible for it, and arrange to keep in contact to find out whether the animal becomes sick or dies. Find out whether it has had rabies vaccine and ask to see the certificate. But even if one is produced, do not assume there is no risk.

9. Even if you have received treatment outside the UK, consult your own doctor when you return to the UK.

10. Rabies vaccine before travel is only recommended if you are likely to be exposed to an unusual risk of infection or if you are undertaking long journeys in remote areas where medical treatment may not be available.

11. This vaccine is not normally provided free for travellers under the NHS. Even if you are immunised, however, this does not remove the need for urgent treatment if you are bitten by an infected animal.
When you have visited your doctor in the UK, you should then contact a personal injury solicitor who specialises in holiday illness and accident compensation.  You may have a claim for compensation after suffering a bite from an animal carrying the rabies virus.
