Most holidaymakers are vigilant when it comes to health and safety at their holiday hotels or by the swimming pool at hotel premises. But for some reason, sense goes out of the window when they hit the beach. You can claim personal injury compensation when you return to the UK if you suffer a holiday accident or illness that was not your fault, when you are abroad.
Always remember to check if there is a lifeguard and a flag warning system in place on the beach. If so, make sure that you and your children know what the flags mean, and which colour represents which warning. Flags which represent coastal regions around Britain, do not necessarily represent the same thing abroad. Check with local lifeguards if you are in doubt.
When you are enjoying a day at the beach, always remember :
1. Make sure children are supervised at all times;
2. Tides, winds, currents and hazardous marine life can all make the safest beach hazardous – be aware of the dangers;
3. Point out a meeting point of visitor centre to your children, where you can meet up if anyone gets lost on the beach.
4. Make sure that you are aware of any areas which are marked and used for water sports. Entering these areas, could put you and your children at risk;
5. Use an appropriate level of sun factor cream; particularly on the children;
6. If you are unhappy with the safety aspects of the beach, report your concerns to the tour operator or holiday representative;
7. Take photographs or videos of anything which causes concern. Also, take names and addresses of fellow holidaymakers who may share your concerns or who may also have the same complaint as you. These can later be used as evidence in any subsequent complaint or compensation claim;
8. Within the European Union you may be able to use - 112 - this will connect you directly to the emergency services. Remember, they may not speak English. Be calm, and let them try to sort out the language difficulty barrier – many emergency services have translators. If you do not get connected through 112 - use the local emergency number. Familiarise yourself with the number when you arrive at your destination.
